Tiger Woods shoots 1-over-par at PGA Championship, at risk of missing cut

Tiger Woods stumbled late in his first round at the PGA Championship, bogeying his last two holes to record a 1-over 72.

It puts Woods in a precarious position to make the cut at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, as he walked off the course tied for 55th with the afternoon wave still to come on a sunny Thursday where low scores are eminently possible. He will surely have to shoot under par on Friday to make the cut, perhaps by several strokes.

What had been an overall steady round of golf was undone with mistakes on the greens on the 8th and 9th holes, which Woods played last after starting on the back nine. He rammed his 49-foot lag putt on the par-3 8th 10 feet past the hole to drop back to even par. Woods appeared to overcompensate for that miscue on No. 9, leaving a 28-footer for birdie six feet short. He was a cup or two off with his par putt, and walked off looking frustrated.

Woods, teeing off just after 8 a.m. ET in a pairing with Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott, quickly put himself behind schedule with a bogey on the par-3 11th after finding the greenside bunker with his second shot. That said, he birdied the par-4 13th — with its distinctive island green, propped up by limestone rocks — after hitting his approach shot to 18 feet and pouring in the birdie putt.

Valhalla is the site of Woods’ 2000 PGA Championship win. Expectations are dramatically lower than they were back then for Woods, 48, who admitted this week that he’s not as sharp as he would like thanks to his myriad injuries, making practice sessions difficult.

In his infrequent appearances over the last two years, Woods has struggled to find a rhythm on the greens, losing strokes gained putting in his last three starts and five of his last six. He gained 0.11 strokes putting on Thursday, though he was well into the positive through 16 holes.
