Steubenville celebrates Pentecost with community spirit and calls for unity

A local organization called Common Ground of Steubenville hosted a free community event celebrating Pentecost.

Pentecost, a Christian holiday, marks the descent of the Holy Spirit onto the apostles and followers of Jesus Christ.

It occurs 50 days after Easter Sunday and is often seen as the birthday of the Christian church, initiating the apostles’ public ministry and the global spread of the Gospel message.

“This is a celebration of life, and the Holy Spirit came to live within our hearts. It was the birth of our church, and we want to commemorate and celebrate with our community the power of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” said attendee Marsha Anderson.

A group of local Christians helped put the event together, naming it Pentecost on North Street.

The event included food, drinks, crafts, live music, and prayer.

“Just excitement from many different churches. We invited all the Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox churches together to celebrate one big event for all the Christians in our area, and even non-Christians. But I think people just coming together as one community, as one body of Christ, would be beautiful for Steubenville,” said Spyridon studio’s Potter, Paul Monroe.

Organizer Andrew Carpenter explained that Pentecost is typically overlooked.

“Easter is always this big holiday for Christians, and it should be, but Pentecost is very undervalued. It’s kind of like where Easter is pointed towards. It’s pointed towards spreading the Gospel and gathering the flock,” said Carpenter.

The organizers of the event utilized their personal funds to host it, emphasizing that the purpose of the day was to unite people under the banner of God.

“I’ll count it as a success if at least one person is moved to preach the Gospel in their own walk of life. That’s our ultimate goal and to just strengthen ties among Christians in the area,” said Carpenter.

Organizers explained they hope to make this an annual event.
