CWS 2024: NC State defeats Georgia, Field of 8 officially set for College World Series

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – North Carolina State edged out Georgia in the deciding game of the a super regional series on Monday, punching its ticket to the College World Series in Omaha.

The No. 10 Wolfpack are the final team into the 2024 CWS field following a 8-5 win over the No. 7 Bulldogs in Athens.

NC State’s win makes this year’s CWS an even split between just two conferences: the ACC and the SEC. The Wolfpack — along with Florida State, Virginia, and North Carolina — will represent the ACC.

Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas A&M — all SEC squads — round out the field of eight.

Georgia was first to get on the board via a two-run homer from Tre Phelps, but the Wolfpack came right back in their next turn at-bat. Garrett Pennington drilled a two-run shot to tie the game a 2-2. NC State scored a pair in the fourth inning, the go-ahead run on a passed ball followed by an Alex Makarewicz RBI single to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Makarewicz would ultimately put the game out of reach in the eighth with a towering two-out, two-run homer, staking the Wolfpack to an 8-4 edge.

The win clinched NC State’s fourth CWS appearance in program history and the third under head coach Elliott Avent. The Wolfpack qualified for the College World Series in 2021, but a COVID outbreak forced them to forfeit.
