Nintendo Direct June 2024 Opens With Mario & Luigi Brothership

The June 2024 Nintendo Direct opened with the reveal trailer for Mario & Luigi Brothership, the first new game in the franchise in almost nine years.

Gameplay and cinematics were shown, with Nintendo executive Shinya Takahashi announcing the game as a “seafaring adventure” where players can unleash “evolved Bros. moves” with Mario and Luigi. Gameplay promises to feature a “dynamic twist” on traditional turn-based combat.

A November 7, 2024 release date was announced despite this being a fresh announcement, meaning players don’t have too long to wait before they can explore “mysterious islands” with the Mario brothers.

“The brothers are back for a brand-new entry in the Mario & Luigi series, where they set sail on Shipshape Island (part ship, part island) to navigate the vast world of Concordia,” Nintendo said. “Play as the mustachioed pair and explore islands that range from tropical rainforests to bustling cities. Along the way, meet new friends to help you on your journey and encounter familiar faces from the Mushroom Kingdom like Peach and Bowser.”

Players are tasked with keeping the Brothership afloat while overcoming obstacles along the way, and “using their powerful Bros. attacks to claim victory in a dynamic twist on turn-based combat.”

The Nintendo Direct was plenty busy otherwise, with a brand new Zelda game being announced alongside the re-reveal of Metroid Prime 4, now subtitled Beyond. Read about every announcement, big and small, in our Everything Announced article.
