England vs Denmark LIVE: Final score as Southgate gives blunt verdict after Three Lions booed at Euro 2024

England vs Denmark LIVE: Final score as Southgate gives blunt verdict after Three Lions booed at Euro 2024

England were far from convincing in a 1-1 draw with Denmark on Thursday, even if it likely ensured advancing to the round of 16 at the European Championship.

Harry Kane gave England another fast start at Euro 2024, scoring it the 18th minute, but the captain was substituted off in the second half as the team faded. England coach Gareth Southgate removed his forward line in a triple substitution with 25 minutes to play.

Denmark leveled in the 34th when Morten Hjulmand fired in a powerful low shot from long distance, after Kane gave away the ball in defense. The Danes made England look ragged in the second half, attacking the end from where English fans’ anxiety and jeers increased late in the game. England has four points from two games, after edging past Serbia 1-0 in its first match.

That points tally always has been enough to advance in the 24-team Euros format. Still, England can finish in any position from first to third in the Group C standings after playing unbeaten Slovenia next Tuesday.

Slovenia drew 1-1 with Serbia earlier Thursday, four days after getting the same result against Denmark. Serbia and Denmark also play Tuesday evening. Relive all the action and reaction from England v Denmark below:

Gareth Southgate must make hard choices after abject England struggle to draw with Denmark

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:16 , Mike Jones

If Gareth Southgate has already warned his players to ignore criticism, he’s going to need to lock them away in Erfurt after this. This was a 1-1 that meant a lot more than failing to win this match. It raises the biggest questions yet over whether England can even come close to winning this tournament.

Almost nothing about the team works right now. If that seems harsh given they have four points and are still on course to top the group, it is about how Gareth Southgate has currently made this team so much less than the sum of their parts.

The biggest problem is in midfield, which admittedly isn’t new and has been the long-term issue. The concern is how Southgate has so far compounded it. Why persist with the Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment, when it obviously didn’t work? Why keep him on at half-time, only to change it minutes later?

England caught between midfield ideals amid search for attacking balance

Thursday 20 June 2024 22:15 , Mike Jones

There was a problem with the team of all the talents. It wasn’t a team. In as much as there is any agreement on anything concerning the England team, Gareth Southgate may have thought he had given the people what they wanted. He had crammed in his four most gifted attackers and a generational talent of a passer, primed to supply them.

And in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s parting contribution, he almost got a glimpse of what might have been.

Southgate thinks Alexander-Arnold is a quarterback of a midfielder. And if an up-and-under seemed borrowed from rugby rather than American football, it resulted in Bukayo Saka heading into the side netting. But by then, the decision had been made. A minute later, Alexander-Arnold was withdrawn, Conor Gallagher introduced in the 1-1 draw with Denmark.

Harry Kane subbed off in England’s tie with Denmark as Alan Shearer praises Gareth Southgate’s bold move

Alan Shearer praised Gareth Southgate’s bold second-half substitutions as the manager brought off his goalscoring captain Harry Kane in a bid to turn the tide.

England endured a frustrating evening in Frankfurt after Kane’s early goal was cancelled out by Morten Hjulmand’s stunning long-range strike to leave the Group C match level at half-time.

And as England continued to toil in the second half, struggling to make clear chances and keep hold of the ball for sustained periods, Southgate turned to his bench for inspiration.

Denmark – 2 points

With one game left to play England are in the best position and just need to avoid a defeat to Slovenia to make it into the knockout rounds. A win will see them finish at the top of the group too.

England vs Denmark player ratings as Walker shines but Alexander-Arnold struggles again

Thursday 20 June 2024 21:29 , Mike Jones

England struggled in their second match at Euro 2024, escaping with a point after a 1-1 draw against an impressive Denmark on Thursday night.

Harry Kane opened his Euro 2024 account in the 18th minute before Denmark equalised through Morten Hjulmand’s long-range strike as the Danes came back strong at the end of the first-half.

Denmark had the better of the chances in the second-half as England wilted late on, but ultimately it was a point apiece in Frankfurt.

England face Slovenia in their final Group C clash on Tuesday night, while Denmark take on Serbia.

But how did each player perform? Here are The Independent’s player ratings:

England are breaking records

Thursday 20 June 2024 21:18 , Mike Jones

England are unbeaten in 13 group stage matches at the European Championship (W8-D5-L0), since a 2-1 defeat against France in Lisbon at Euro 2004.

This is a tournament record.

England defender Kyle Walker, speaking to BBC One:

Thursday 20 June 2024 21:13 , Mike Jones

“I think it’s tournament football. This is a good Denmark team. We’re top of the group so let’s try to take a positive from this game. We’ve not lost, we’ve conceded a great streak from outside the box. We’re top of the group so let’s move on to the next game.

“I think it’s just the game. You’re sensing the game, their feeling. As defenders you try and think of ‘what if’, rather than me charging forward they go and score. Let’s take it as a well-deserved point.

“The manager wants us to play free, attacking football. Sometimes in tournament football you have to manage the game. It’s tough when you come to these grounds, hostile environments. We’re top of the group so let’s move on.

“They’ll know as individuals, as a team collectively, we’ve got another gear but we haven’t lost a game. Everyone wants us to steamroll teams three or four nil but that’s not football these days. We’ve got a point and let’s move on with that.”

Watkins on Denmark’s performance

Thursday 20 June 2024 21:09 , Mike Jones

“You’re going to get these games. We’re England and people want to beat us at the end of the day.

“It’s not going to be easy, we can’t just steamroller teams by four or five just because we’ve got world-class players. [We’ve got] another point, [and we’re] unbeaten in two.

“Sometimes, you’ve got to hold your hands up. I was sat behind it on the bench, it was an unbelievable strike, in off the post. Fair play. We played well at times and so did they. The main thing is that we’re unbeaten.”

Joachim Andersen on being aggressive:

Thursday 20 June 2024 21:03 , Mike Jones

“I think we played a really good game today. We have worked hard on being aggressive. [England] like to have the ball, so we shouldn’t be giving them much time on the ball.

“We had a lot of confidence, and hopefully we can take that into the next game. We need to win the next game to go through. I have the feeling that we are in a good place, and we are really satisfied with this performance.”

Conor Gallagher’s post match thoughts:

Thursday 20 June 2024 20:57 , Mike Jones

“Tough game, we know we can do much better, but credit to Denmark. They played well and they’re a good side. We’ve got look at ourselves and we know we can improve to get the three points in the next game.

“The instruction was just to give a bit of energy and pressure on the ball, as well as to keep the ball better than we were doing, and try to control the game. It was a tough time to come on, but when you look at it, I think 1-1 is not the worst result.

“We know that if we’re going to win the tournament, we need to play better. We have to improve how we’re playing, on and off the ball. The good thing is we know we can.”

Kane gets off the mark

Rio Ferdinand on switching things up

Thursday 20 June 2024 20:41 , Mike Jones

“At the moment England do not know when to squeeze the pitch, who is going when, the distances between each other. Once you have questions tactically the picture can change in a split second in front of you and you are lost.

“I would put Declan Rice in the six, Jude Bellingham in the eight running from deep and Phil Foden in the free role as the ten. I think that is how you will get the best of these players.”

Watkins assesses his performance

Thursday 20 June 2024 20:36 , Mike Jones

Ollie Watkins spoke to Euro2024.com about his own performance having come on as a second half substitute to replace Harry Kane.

He said: “It feels weird saying [that I’ve made my Euros debut]. It was a great atmosphere, I loved every minute of it to be fair. It’s just a shame we were a little bit short.

“I like to run in behind, that’s my game. I like to cause defenders problems. I feel like I did that, but it was difficult. Denmark, fair play to them, they made it very difficult for us with their back five.”

Gary Neville highlights the problem with Declan Rice for England after ‘nervous’ display

Thursday 20 June 2024 20:31 , Mike Jones

Gary Neville insists Declan Rice needs to play further up the field after looking “nervous” in England’s draw against Denmark at Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate’s side remain unbeaten and top of Group C on four points and on the brink of progress to the last 16.

But Neville is adamant Rice is not at the same level as some of the best holding midfielders in Europe when picking the ball up from the back line and claims Southgate could learn from how Mikel Arteta handled him for Arsenal towards the end of the season.

‘We play with both fire and passion’

Thursday 20 June 2024 20:26 , Mike Jones

Denmark coach, Kasper Hjulmand said: “I am not disappointed with the result, but it was clear that there was more to this match. We play as Denmark should play. This is how we are. We play with both fire and passion.

“We played a good match where we thought we could win. Against England, there was plenty of expression, fire and passion from the players.

“We are exactly where we need to be in this match, where we delivered for 90 minutes.”

‘This is the spirit of the team’

Thursday 20 June 2024 20:21 , Mike Jones

Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg said: “The fans are great, with our fans it felt like playing at home. England have a lot of good players, they brought in fresh energy in the second half to change the game.

“We managed to limit the England stars as a team, we prepared well and were organised, and everyone who came on had the right energy. This is the spirit of the team.”

‘We played good today’

Thursday 20 June 2024 20:16 , Mike Jones

Denmark midfielder, Mikkel Damsgaard, reacting to England draw: “I think we were really tight in the duels. Overall, we played very good today. We showed what we were capable of, and we also kept up the energy in the second half.

“When you play a team as good as them, it’s very hard. Most of all, we are just happy with the performance, and we showed that we can play against the best teams. We also had the chances to win the game.”

Walker explains where England can improve

Thursday 20 June 2024 20:11 , Mike Jones

England’s Kyle Walker told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We take away the point and we are top of the group – I cannot stand here saying it was a fantastic performance.

“Collectively we need to know when to go or when not to go. We have to go as a full team and that is something we need to practice because you come to the knockout stages and slight things like that can cost you.”

A worrying statistic

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:51 , Mike Jones

England have won just two of their last seven games.

They lost to Iceland and Brazil, have drawn with North Macedonia, Belgium and Denmark. The wins came against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia.

This isn’t the kind of form that will take them through to the end of the tournament. Can Gareth Southgate turn things around?

More from Southgate

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:48 , Mike Jones

In his post-match interview with the BBC Gareth Southgate address some concerns around Harry Kane and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking about the defender-turned-midfielder he said: “He’s had some moments where he’s delivered what we thought he would. We know it’s an experiment. We know we don’t have a natural replacement for Kalvin Philips. We’re trying different things and at the moment we’re not flowing as we’d like.”

Southgate again emphasised England’s lack of energy on the pitch and explained that was a reason why he took off Kane: “We needed energy. We’ve had two games in a short turnaround and we needed fresh legs, energy to press. I think Harry has only had one 90 minutes in over a month so that was the decision we took.

“There’s a huge amount of work, that’s evident from the two performances we’ve given and we’ve got to be tight. We understand people will be disappointed with the performances and rightly so and we’ve got to make them better.”

‘Clearly not what we hoped for’ says Southgate

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:45 , Mike Jones

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC One: “Clearly not what we would have hoped [for]. We’re not using the ball well enough and we have to accept that if you do that you will suffer at times as we have tonight. We know there’s another level we have to find.

“I think we’ve played teams that are quite fluid in back threes and it’s not easy to get pressure on them but we’ve got to do that better than we have in these last two matches. Not keeping the ball has been another problem.

“I wanted Conor [Gallagher] on [to replace Alexander-Arnold]. We needed energy, we needed to press better. Conor does that very well.”

England fans celebrate Harry Kane’s opening goal against Denmark in Euro 2024 match

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:42 , Mike Jones

This is the moment England fans celebrated Harry Kane’s opening goal against Denmark in their second Euro 2024 group match on Thursday (20 June).

Fans at London’s Wembley Box Park went wild as Kane hit the back of the net in the 18th minute of the game.

Kyle Walker raced around Victor Kristiansen before squaring the ball for Kane, who made no mistake from inside the six-yard box.

Morten Hjulmand equalised for Denmark with a glorious strike in the 38th minute.

Following a sloppy pass from Kane, Hjulmand received the ball outside of the penalty area and struck the ball into the far corner.

Trippier proud to reach 50 caps

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:39 , Mike Jones

More reaction from England’s players. Here’s Kieran Trippier speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about making his 50th appearance for the Three Lions tonight.

He said: “Very proud to get 50 caps for my country, but my main focus is the result – it wasn’t there for us tonight.

“Four points two games and we know there is so much to improve on. We stay will calm, stay positive and stay together – that is the most important thing.

“We understand the supporters’ frustration from the outside, but as a staff and a team we need to stay together. It is tournament football, it is difficult no matter who you play against.

“We know as players we can take it up so many levels. There is no need to panic, the performances we know we can do better. One game left in the group and we look forward to that one.”

More from Harry Kane

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:36 , Mike Jones

Harry Kane addressed the question about England repeatedly dropping deep after scoring. He said: “I think it’s something we’ve got to get better at.

“I think we’re starting games well but when the teams are dropping deeper we’re not quite sure how to get the pressure on and who’s going.

“In the second half we tried to change a little bit but it was difficult. Credit to Denmark, they caused us some threats. Overall we’ve got to look back and see where we can improve.”

Thomas Frank says Southgate still working out his best team

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:33 , Mike Jones

Thomas Frank speaking as a pundit on BBC One: “Kane is a fantastic goalscorer, but how do you get the team to work the right way [around him]? No doubt Gareth is searching for the best line-up.

“I think he was brave taking him off today and he was proactive in trying to change the game.”

Rio Ferdinand criticised the state of Frankfurt Arena’s pitch during England’s Euro 2024 game against Denmark on Thursday evening.

Kyle Walker was forced to change his boots just 10 minutes into the game as match footage captured players sliding on the turf and large chunks cutting up.

Discussing the state of the pitch, BBC Match of the Day commentator Rio Ferdinand said it looked like players “needed rollerskates”.

The Group C match finished 1-1 after Harry Kane’s 18th minute opener was cancelled out by Morten Hjulmand equaliser 20 minutes later.

Harry Kane reacts to Denmark draw

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:24 , Mike Jones

Harry Kane gave an honest assessment of England’s performance and admits the team knows they can improve. He told the BBC: “I think we said before the tournament there’s no easy games and I think that’s showing.

“We’ve got levels we can reach and we can be better both with and without the ball. I think the sign of a good team is when you’re not playing at your best and still find a way to get results like we have in the last two games.

“We’re top of the group. We know we can improve. I know there will probably loads of noise and a bit of disappointment back home but we experienced this in the last Euros as well when we drew to Scotland.

“Step by step, we’ll get there.”

‘The Trent experiment’ and no pressing: Are pundits right to be so critical of England tactics?

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:21 , Mike Jones

No pressing from Harry Kane. No cohesion in midfield. No pace in attack, no runners beyond the defence, not enough pressure on the ball.

Listen to the BBC Sport half-time talk on England’s Euro 2024 match against Denmark and you might be forgiven for thinking the Three Lions trailed by a couple of goals or were in danger of heading out of the tournament, not level at 1-1 and top of the as-it-stands group table.

It all echoed of we’re not creative enough, we’re not possibly good enough.

If you know, you know.

Gary Lineker assessing Harry Kane’s performance against Denmark: “As a striker you have two jobs, score goals, which Harry Kane has been good at all his career, and make space.

“He needs his manager to come to him and ask a little bit more of him. I would have expected that if I’d put in that kind of performance.

“Against a back three he has to stretch the play, run one way and then come short so you don’t have to come too far to receive it. He needs to make more space for the midfield players behind him to create chances.”

90+3 mins: Damage limitations. England sneak a point against a better more proactive Denmark side. The Three Lions remain top of Group C but their performances over these two matches have been shocking.

As soon as they come up against better opposition they’ll crumble at this rate for being too passive and timid.

It isn’t often Harry Kane is taken off, especially when there is something at stake, so it was a surprise to see his number come up, though the fact Ollie Watkins had a chance straight away may mean Southgate is looking for his ability to run in behind the Danish defence. Southgate’s changes come now. Eberechi Eze, Jarrod Bowen and Ollie Watkins all come on to replace Phil Foden, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka.

It’s a totally new forward line for England now.

Chief football writer Miguel Delaney reports from inside the ground:

Southgate badly needs to get a hold of midfield, and for that midfield to get a hold of the game. The most striking contrast between the teams – and the source of why Denmark are so on top – is the huge gaps between England’s central players, while Denmark are constantly playing in these tight triangles. One team always has five yards between passes. The other… well, there’s not even a consistency to that. It has again forced England back in that way that has become customary in big games under Southgate.

‘People will feel disappointed’ says Southgate

Thursday 20 June 2024 19:50 , Mike Jones

The England boss has continued his media rounds and is now speaking with BBC radio saying: “We know people will be disappointed with our performances.

“At the moment we are not pressing with the intensity that we need to and that’s meaning we are having to sit be a bit deeper.

“They are the problems and we need to find the solutions. We need to asses the two performances and work through it together. If you allow players to pick passes then they can play passes which can hurt you.”

Gareth Southgate’s tactics in question

Thursday 20 June 2024 17:56 , Mike Jones

Jamie Carragher and Daniel Sturridge have questioned England’s tactics in that first half after they decided to sit back and defend a one goal lead.

They started well when in control of the ball but a great strike from Morten Hjulmand drew Denmark level.

Trent & Rice are far too deep when Denmark have the ball, they are too concerned with what’s behind them. They need to stop what’s in front of them. Centre backs need to be screaming at them to get out to enable them to push out. #EURo2024 — Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) June 20, 2024

England are too talented to sit back after scoring, we got away with it last game but paid for it this game. Our best defense is to attack. — Daniel Sturridge (@DanielSturridge) June 20, 2024

England fans slam ‘disgrace of a pitch’ as injury risk at Euro 2024 game against Denmark

Thursday 20 June 2024 17:52 , Mike Jones

England were frustrated by the poor condition of the pitch at the Frankfurt Arena as players repeatedly lost their footing on the surface in the first half of their Euro 2024 fixture against Denmark.

The pitch was clearly cuttting up as England searched for a breakthrough goal, with right-back Kyle Walker escaping an injury after slipping and almost rolling over his left ankle.

The Manchester City full-back even changed his boots only minutes into the Group C fixture, but was then involved in the opening goal as he set up captain Harry Kane to fire England into the lead.

Senior football correspondent Richard Jolly reports from inside the ground:

A rather disjointed game. England took a lead with a goal that was scrappy, even if Kyle Walker did well to fashion an opening and Harry Kane to finish it. Morten Hjulmand’s equaliser was the game’s moment of real quality so far but also showed that there are times when Denmark are finding space in midfield.

Chief football reporter Miguel Delaney reports from inside the ground:

The atmosphere has been among the best in the tournament I’ve experienced so far, with that amplified by the closed roof. It’s been a really good feel. Fans were freely mixing in the city centre all day. Danish fans were much earlier into their seats, filling their end an hour before kick-off. England’s end was packed by the start, though, and both were in incredible voice.

Gareth Southgate calls special meeting to prime players before Denmark test at Euro 2024

Thursday 20 June 2024 16:50 , Mike Jones

Gareth Southgate has told his young England squad to shut out all criticism, as they held a specific meeting over excessive scrutiny before the second Euro 2024 fixture against Denmark.

With 12 of the players experiencing their first ever tournament, the manager wanted to make them conscious of how the focus is very different to the club game and ensure they know how to handle it.

England opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Serbia, although the restrained nature of the performance did receive criticism. The aim is to ensure they are further focussed for the game in Frankfurt against Denmark.
