Totally Cool recalls over 60 ice cream products over listeria risk: FDA

Totally Cool, the makers of Friendly’s, Jeni’s and other branded ice cream, is recalling 67 ice cream products because they could be contaminated with listeria, the FDA announced.

The products were distributed nationwide through retail stores and via direct delivery.

The Owings Mills, Maryland, company stopped the production and distribution of the affected products on June 24, after the FDA identified the presence of listeria through sampling.

Consumers who have bought a recalled product can take it back to the store for a full refund.

What is listeria?

Listeria is a bacteria that can contaminate many foods and cause foodborne infections that could be serious and sometimes fatal.

Elderly and young children are particularly vulnerable to listeria. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
