What to know: Jupiter’s Keegan Bradley introduced as next U.S. Ryder Cup captain

Keegan Bradley is just as surprised as the rest of the professional golf world that he was selected to captain the U.S. team at the 2025 Ryder Cup.

The PGA of America introduced Bradley as the 2025 Ryder Cup captain for Team USA in a press conference on Tuesday in Times Square.

Bradley, who said he spoke with Tiger Woods on Tuesday morning about the captaincy, called it one of the top honors of his professional career.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be more surprised by something in my entire life,” Bradley said of receiving the call from 2023 U.S. captain Zach Johnson.

“When they called me, I felt funny after the call. I don’t think I reacted in the way they expected me to. I was in complete shock. It was heavy.”

Bradley took time to thank his peers for the selection and reiterated his goal to earn a place on the 2025 Ryder Cup roster through qualification points and not captain’s pick.

“I’m going to be out there with the guys, playing in the same tournaments as them,” Bradley said. “As opposed to in the past, they have to fly in and schedule all these things. … I know these guys really well and I see them week-to-week.

“I bleed red, white and blue.”

Keegan Bradley Ryder Cup record

Bradley featured on the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2012 and 2014 with both events won by Europe.

He was arguably the best U.S. player in 2012, earning three total points with a 3-1 record. He earned one point with a 1-2 record in 2014.

Bradley was in contention to feature on the 2023 Ryder Cup U.S. after two PGA Tour wins in the qualifying window. He was ultimately passed over by captain Zach Johnson with the decisive phone call documented on Netflix’s “Full Swing” docuseries.

“That moment was real,” “I was crushed. It took us a while to get over that as a family. We were devastated.

“It was a weird feeling knowing that I could’ve been there and helped the team … I have nothing but respect for those guys and what they do on and off the course. Now sitting here as a captain, I have a different perspective on what he went through.”

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson considered more likely candidates

Bradley’s selection has been considered surprising as months of speculation more closely tied U.S. golf legends Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson with the position.

“With my new responsibilities to the Tour and time commitments involved, I felt I would not be able to commit the time to Team USA that is required to captain,” Woods said. “That doesn’t mean I would not want to captain a team in the future.”

Mickelson has twice finished runner-up (2002, 2009) in the U.S. Open at the Black Course at Bethpage State Park on Long Island, which will host the 2025 Ryder Cup. Woods won the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black.

Woods discussed his potential captaincy at the PGA Championship in May, confirming the two sides were “still talking.”

“There’s nothing that has been confirmed yet. We’re still working on what that might look like — also whether or not I have the time to do it.”
